Overview of Potassium-based Concrete Densifier and Hardener

Concrete Hardener

Potassium-based Densifier and Hardener

Potassium-based Densifier and Hardener is a functional sealing material with potassium silicate as the core active ingredient. It is a water-based inorganic penetrating material and represents the second generation of concrete sealing and hardening products, developed after sodium-based and before lithium-based products. Its overall performance is significantly superior to sodium‑based hardeners, offering deeper penetration, higher hardness gain, and better efflorescence resistance. Compared with lithium‑based products, it provides a cost‑effective solution with comparable hardness improvement, though with slightly less anti‑efflorescence performance. It is an ideal choice for general industrial and commercial floors where balanced performance and economy are required.

Working Principle

Potassium silicate penetrates into the capillary pores of concrete and rapidly reacts with free calcium hydroxide and calcium silicate hydrate (C‑S‑H) to generate abundant and stable C‑S‑H gel. The gel fills internal pores and blocks capillary channels, transforming loose concrete structures into a dense, integrated whole. It achieves internal hardening, sealing, dust prevention, and water resistance. The reaction products are inherently stable and will not peel or flake off, ensuring durable and permanent performance.

Key Performance Features

1.Deep Penetration and Efficient Reaction

Potassium silicate possesses a smaller molecular size than sodium silicate, allowing deeper penetration into the concrete capillary network. It reacts vigorously with free calcium hydroxide to generate substantial C‑S‑H gel, which effectively densifies the substrate. It also provides good resistance to efflorescence, significantly reducing white salt deposits compared with sodium‑based hardeners, though not entirely eliminating them as lithium‑based products do.

2.Enhanced Hardness and Wear Resistance

It can increase the surface hardness of concrete by 30%–40%, markedly improving compressive strength and abrasion resistance. It reduces micro‑cracking and extends the service life of floors, delivering performance close to that of lithium‑based systems at a more economical cost.

3.Sealing, Water Resistance, and Corrosion Resistance

The gel fills all capillary pores and effectively blocks the ingress of water, oil stains, weak acids, and weak alkalis. It offers excellent dust‑proof performance, minimising dusting and sanding, and substantially reduces daily cleaning requirements.

4.Easy Construction and Simple Maintenance

No complicated neutralisation or rinsing procedures are required. The application process is simpler than that of sodium‑based products and comparable to lithium‑based ones. After curing, the floor naturally develops a gloss; subsequent polishing can create a marble‑like decorative finish.

5.Strong Weather Resistance

It resists high and low temperatures as well as freeze‑thaw cycles, making it suitable for outdoor floors and open areas. It exhibits good resistance to ageing and cracking, ensuring durable performance in varied climates.
